Malta Stock Exchange Hosts Second Roundtable Event Focusing on Market Liquidity Enhancement Initiatives
Building upon the momentum generated during the first Roundtable session held in June 2024, the Malta Stock Exchange (MSE) successfully hosted its second Roundtable event on Wednesday, 22 January 2025. The event centred on potential market enhancement strategies to improve market liquidity, particularly share buybacks and corporate market-making programmes.

Following the introduction by Malta Stock Exchange Executive Chairman, Mr Joseph Portelli, the event featured a keynote on share buybacks by Dr Nicola Buhagiar, Senior Associate at Camilleri Preziosi, followed by an engaging panel discussion on the same topic led by Mr Portelli. The panel of experts was made up of Mr Christian Cassar, Head at BOV CEO Office, Mr David Lanzon, Senior Portfolio Manager at APS, Dr Ian Gauci, Managing Partner at GTG Advocates, and Ms Lorraine Vella, Head of Capital Markets Supervision at the Malta Financial Services Authority.

Dr Nicholas Curmi, Partner at Ganado Advocates, kicked off the second part of the event with a keynote on Corporate Market Making, which was also the topic of the second panel discussion moderated by Mr Simon Zammit, Malta Stock Exchange CEO. The second panel of experts was made up of Dr Michael Psaila, Partner at Mamo TCV Advocates, Mr Jesmond Mizzi, Managing Director at Jesmond Mizzi Financial Advisors Ltd, Mr David Grech, Managing Director at Michael Grech Financial Investment Services, and Mr Chris Casapinta, Director at Finco Trust Services Ltd.

The event concluded with an update from Mr Portelli on the initiatives announced in the first Roundtable event held in June, including the ongoing discussions with tax authorities for potential benefits for liquidity providers and issuer market makers.
